t’Art !

I re-purpose surplus, love the obsolete especially in multiples, 2D and 3D. I’m fascinated by fabrication and fixings. I transform, tart-up-cycle and embellish the expired. I love usefulness and playfulness and to mess with scale and emphasise texture. Give me glues and scissors and I will surprise you. Recycling media includes that from the brewing, entertainment, financial and sports industries.

PS I also make a great Yorkshire curd tart ! PPS I am NOT a Sun reader, but I did win an art competition affiliated to the greatbigartexhibition (on line) during the 2021 lockdowns in association with Firstsite Gallery, Colchester.Anthony Gormley chose my dragonfly as top fly ...and I won one of his dogs ...or is it a foal.

How presumptive !…but if you google me and ‘the Sun ‘ comes up , please read on for an explanation ..

During the lockdowns ( to avoid meltdowns) of 2021 I decided to enter all art competitions that were advertised on line.This included things like :’the artists support pledge ‘( fabulous - wish I’d thought of that Peter x) , Aspiga save water T -shirt designs (no wins ) ,a very serious bespoke bookmarks design competition (nope not shortlisted ) and instagramming furiously for something called ‘thegreatbigartexhibition’.This involved posting art on an artist proposed theme.The Anthony Gormley theme was animals and this happened to be affiliated to something that the Sun ‘newspaper’ were running too. Apparently Mr G and his wife knocked out mini clay dogs of an evening during the lockdowns.

I didn’t expect to get shortlisted never mind win ,as there were cutie pie ‘things’ entered by children and I thought Mr G or the paper would go for them rather than an old timer … any road I won a signed ‘to Suzan’ glazed clay ‘dog’ figurine by Sir G.Sorry Tony ‘ole boy but my pal says it’s more like a foal and something like what you’d win at the fair ! The consensus is that in this instance my outsize dragon fly out arts his fey horseee-dawg on every level.I know I shouldn’t say this let alone write it … but that is often my inclination…

A few weeks later a (nameless here)hack from the Sun rang and ‘interviewed’ me in 5 minutes .He began by saying that he hadn’t looked at my website (?) .I said you won’t like this but I used to illustrate the food page for the Guardian… that’s when he dug up the headline ‘Suzan Inceer Sun reader’ …and this rises to the surface of my google soup.He studiously wrote the precise opposite of what I said - I wasn’t “thrilled’ - just surprised .. I definitely wasn’t ‘walking on air’. I said I’d probably sell the doggy at some point for charity ,(that’s still my intention).He didn’t like that ,he wanted me to be all slimy and grateful and fit his stereotype. I guess that you’ll agree that the fact that the article was published on April 1st is highly appropriate !!

The following week I was in a drawing day dream when the phone rang and a chap said ‘ are you going to be in in about an hour -I’m driving over from Essex to photograph you for the paper’. I said ….er yes what’s your name again ?… he said Arthur Edwards … google me. I didn’t … I called a few people … my Mum said it’s a joke - an early April fool… an hour later I rang her having now ransacked me wardrobe to find my most photogenic outfit (I failed).. and said I think you’re right. Then ding dong .. and downstairs was an elderly but sprightly chap , smiley eyes and cameras slung round his neck. He did look vaguely familiar (I don’t have a tv) …he looked like he needed a cup of tea .. on the phone I’d mentioned that I was being v careful for my vulnerable Mums sake ( it was at the peak of COVID)- he said no probs I’m vaccinated… During these bizarre times no one had been In my flat for months and yet that all went out the window in a trice. …how fickle am I ? I also loathe having photos taken in the extreme ?!On the way up to my first floor flat I said would you like a macaroon ? He said love one. Yes , the man who photographed Princess Diana on that bench in front of the Taj Mahal ( etc) was now sat on my blue sofa.

On the phone beforehand I had said to him - heck I’d better have a hoover -he said nope just put some lippy on.. agreed that was typical Sun… but everything else about him wasn’t .. he was charming , polite and genuinely interested- unlike his shitty colleague. He took 35+ photos of me this way and that -when I managed to assume a pose that he liked he exclaimed “Botticelli ” (Note- I wasn’t naked).

We went for a walk on the cliff top and I loved the more natural photos that he took of me there.2 hours later when he left in his electric car he delved into a hessian shopping bag and slung a t-shirt at me … it says ‘jabs army’ re the Suns campaign for volunteer vaccinators -I said I would wear it to annoy my brother as he had trained to jab but not been called on yet.
